Turning the tables on the world order: December 12

The Third Sunday of Advent is when we traditionally hear the Magnificat (Luke 1:46b-55), the ancient song that Mary sings when she learns she is to bear the Christ child. The radical nature of this text is often lost on churches in Europe and North America, but that's because it truly is good news for the poor, a radical call to turn the tables on the world order.

What would happen in our world if we truly tried to live the ethos of the Magnificat, with its call to "lift up the lowly" and "bring down the mighty," "to fill the hungry with good things" and "send the rich empty away"? If those of us in the West can see ourselves for what we are, the global rich, then maybe we can understand our role in enslaving people around the world to support our lifestyle, with our Walmart ways and corporate culture. So sing on, Mary! Sing a new way of being into our hearts again in this Advent season!

Here are two of our settings of portions of the Magnificat:

  • "Magnificat" (pdf) - a lively SAB setting of the opening of the Latin version of the text
  • "My soul sings" (pdf) - an SATB setting of a new paraphrase of the Magnificat, with solo verses
